About This Outreach

With support from the Rotary Club of Mental Health and Wellness through the Be Kind Scholarship awarded to our Director, Dr. Mary Lilian Nabwire, The Haven Mental Health Foundation conducted a mental health awareness outreach in Katanga, engaging more than 200 youths and their respective zonal community leaders

The outreach focused on two key conditions affecting many young people: depression and substance use disorders. Through interactive discussions, participants learned what these conditions are, how they develop, their common signs and symptoms, available treatment options, and the importance of seeking help early. The sessions also covered healthy coping strategies, the potential consequences of untreated mental health conditions, and available sources of support, including the Bosa Mental Health Clinic at Mulago National Referral Hospital.

Prior to the educational sessions, participants completed a brief assessment designed to understand their existing knowledge and perceptions regarding depression and substance use disorders. This provided valuable baseline information while also helping to identify and address common misconceptions and myths surrounding mental health.

The outreach brought together youth, local community leaders from various zones of Katanga, and teachers from the host community school. Community leaders and educators reinforced key messages on the risks associated with illicit drug use and encouraged young people to seek professional support when experiencing symptoms of mental health challenges.

A question-and-answer session provided an opportunity for participants to engage directly with facilitators, ask questions, and share personal experiences. These discussions contributed to an open and supportive learning environment where mental health could be discussed without judgment.

Recognizing the important role community leaders play in supporting young people, an engagement session was also held with local leaders. The discussion focused on building their understanding of depression and substance use disorders, strengthening their ability to recognize signs of distress among young people, and encouraging timely referral to appropriate mental health services.

At The Haven Mental Health Foundation, we remain committed to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and strengthening pathways to mental health care within communities.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the Rotary Club of Mental Health and Wellness and the Be Kind Scholarship team for their financial support, which made this outreach possible.
